Artists have admired the grand spectacle of the Flinders Ranges for many hundreds of years, from the original owners of the land through to the modern-day painter, photographer and filmmaker.

The group has been painting and exhibiting for 10 years and our annual Wilpena Woolshed exhibition in October 2011, with record sales, was our 10th Anniversary Exhibition.

The Painters of the Flinders Ranges have evolved into an eclectic group of professional artists with a wide range of styles; realist to abstract, landscape to portraiture and mediums including pastel, watercolour, ink, and acrylic and oil paints. Be it through painting or drawing, they all share a fascination and respect for this awe inspiring landscape - renowned worldwide for its rugged mountain scenery, deep gorges and tranquil valleys.

The group has enjoyed critical acclaim and wide-spread appreciation throughout the Flinders Ranges and their work is represented in collections throughout Australia and overseas.

The Painters of the Flinders Ranges Network was set up by the Northern Regional Development Board in 2002 to promote and develop the work of artists in the Flinders Ranges Region and to promote a rewarding tourism experience in the form of a yearly exhibition for locals and visitors alike.

South Australian painters with a focus on the Flinders Ranges were invited to apply to be members. The launching of the network and our inaugural exhibition, entitled
"The Flinders Revealed" opened at Wilpena Woolshed on the 24th of August 2002 and ran for 3 weeks with 11 members and a total of 85 paintings.

2004 saw big changes for the Painters of the Flinders Ranges, as we were removed from the protective umbrella of the NRDB and assisted to become an Incorporated body with our own Constitution. Our first AGM was held in May 2004. Members took on the roles of Chairperson, Vice Chairperson , Secretary and Treasurer and a yearly membership fee came into being. Our annual 4 week long exhibition in the Wilpena Woolshed coincides and is part of the Flinders Ranges 'Brush with Art' art trail in September and October. Members are rostered on during this exhibition to be artists in residence and to help hang and man the exhibition. It's a great opportunity to paint, network, promote and soak up the atmosphere of the Flinders Ranges.
