The Flinders Ranges

Far more than the sum of its famous national parks, the Flinders Ranges stretches almost 500 kilometres north from Crystal Brook to the edge of the Strzelecki Desert. Its diverse climate, elevation and soils have fostered a rich assortment of flora and fauna, survivors of its testing extremes.

Habitats of the Flinders Ranges include accessible settled areas and remote rugged wilderness. The open ochre red plains splashed with bluebush rise to fossil studded, sawtooth peaks more than 600 million years old. The turbulent mark of time here is incomprehensibly vast. Some granites in this oldest of mountain ranges trace back more than 1800 million years. These ancient eroded forms preceded and long ago towered over the Himalaya.

Abandoned homesteads, gravestones and mines attest to the trials and demands of this untamed land. The Adnyamathanha people's harmonious relationship with this land has lasted for thousands of years.

Callabonna, Moolawatana, Arkaroola, Balcanoona, Patawarta, Wirrealpa, Parachilna, Moralana, Warrakimbo........ are among many sonorous place names. They sing of earlier people in far away times when rocks were carved and painted and red ochre was traded in distant Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Come and see for yourself!
